MATCH POINT MINISTRIES STAGE 3rd ANNUAL FAMILY TENNIS CELEBRATION WITH TENNIS PROS
Boca Raton, FL (March 21, 2011)
– Match Point Ministries (MPM) held its 3rd annual Spiritually Tough Tennis Awards Breakfast with the Pros on March 18th, 2011 which featured guest speaker David Wheaton.

Family Tennis Celebration BreakfastDuring his 13 years on the professional tennis tour, David reached the semifinals or better in singles or doubles of every Grand Slam tournament including the semi-finals at Wimbledon - and attained a career-high singles world ranking of #12. He won the prestigious Grand Slam Cup, represented the United States in David Cup competition, and scored victories over such notable players such as Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Jim Courier and Michael Chang.

Currently David is an author, speaker and radio talk show host. His popular first book, University of Destruction: Your Game Plan for Spiritual Victory on Campus, aims to help students be "Overcomers" in college. He is also the host of The Christian Worldview, a weekly nationally-syndicated radio program that airs on 200 stations. In addition, David is a contributing tennis columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

David gave a great presentation Thursday night at Saint Andrew’s School where he spoke about his book “University of Destruction: Your Game Plan for Spiritual Victory on Campus.” Key points were the three pillars of peril which where sex, drugs and alcohol, and Humanism (Non-Christian Worldview). There were some very good questions from the audience including one from the 2010 Ace Awards winner and editor of Florida Tennis, Jim Martz. He asked David what he thought about the Agassi book “Open” which he commented that Agassi spoke well of himself (David) but was very tough on some of the other player’s on the tour.

For those of you who missed this great presentation we will have some of David’s books for sale from our product section online. They make great graduation gifts for any student who receives one!

David Wheaton at Grace FMThe Awards Breakfast, hosted by Scott Williams, President of Match Point Ministries (MPM), author of "Serious Tennis" and host of the popular DVD series, Spiritually Tough Tennis (STT), honored Carl Foster as this year’s Media Award winner. Carl is now broadcasting for Grace FM where he is making a wonderful impact for Christ over the airwaves. His show the “Good Sports Magazine Show” on Friday’s from 1-2 p.m. is incredible and of course David Wheaton stopped by last week to share his testimony over the airwaves. A great surprise for David was when his mom called in from Minnesota, which he said doesn’t happen very often. It was great to hear how the Wheaton’s continually prayed for David and emphasized being “Christ centered” in everything that he was doing and especially when the world was reaching out to tempt him on the tour.

Christian Alshon was named the Ace Award winner for Spiritually Tough Player of the year. Christian not only became ranked number 1 in the State of Florida last year, but he also was the International Little Mo’s Doubles Champion and Singles Finalist! Christian received the Sportsmanship Award from his peers at the State Championships! As always Christian glorifies God in every match he plays including having the cross stenciled on his racquet!

Saturday, included a family tennis celebration and clinic featuring David and his wife Brodie Wheaton. Brodie provided instruction during the clinic and took pictures of the 50-60 participants who all had a chance to play with David. It was a truly a day of tennis where our ministry shines the brightest on the tennis courts!

A special thank you goes out to Bill Ogden who once again provided beautiful cross book marks and calendars for all present (also featured in the product section online). Thanks to Darren at the Calvary Grille who did a great job with the breakfast as did Coaches Diego and John at registration, and all our other volunteers who helped to make the family tennis celebration week a success.
